Leylah, during her junior career, had reached the final of Australian Open singles final, in January 2019. In June 2019, she had won the French Open girls’ singles title and had become the first Canadian female winner of a junior Grand Slam title since Eugenie Bouchard had triumphed at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

In February 2020, during the Billie Jean King Cup, she had earned her first win against a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the WTA singles rankings. She had defeated the then world number 5 Belinda Bencic.

Later that month, she had reached the final of a tournament on the WTA Tour for the first time in her career. During her run to the final of the Mexico Open, she had won 12 sets in a row.

In March 2021, she had won the Monterrey Open singles title, her first title on the WTA Tour. She was the youngest player in the main draw of that tournament and had not dropped a single set during the tournament.

During her fairytale run to the final of the 2021 US Open, she had defeated the defending champion and 3rd seed Naomi Osaka in the 3rd round, former world number 1 and 16th seed Angelique Kerber in the 4th round, 5th seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-final, and 2nd seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final. This had made her just the 3rd female player in the Open Era to have defeated 3 of the top 5 seeds at the US Open.
